Even as the driver of the New Deep company bus that crushed a girl, Gurpreet Kaur (12), to death near Makhu in Ferozepur on Thursday presented himself before the police on Sunday, the Sangarsh Committee formed to ensure justice is done in the case issued an ‘ultimatum’ to the police to book the owner of the bus in seven days till December 26.
The driver Pardeep Singh is likely to be presented before the court on Monday.
Senior Congress leader Inderjit Singh Zira is leading the Sangarsh Committe formed on Sunday with Congress’ Kisan-Khet Mazdoor cell vice-president Gurmej Singh Baharwali, Baljit Singh, Bohad Singh, Hardeep Singh, Major Singh, Ram Singh Sarhali and Gurbachan Singh all part of the committee.
Zira told HT that the bhog ceremony of the girl would be on December 26 at Makhu’s grain market instead of at her
village Dialpura in Tarn Taran. “If police do not take requisite action against the driver and the owner of the bus till Dec ember 26, the committee would launch massive agitation,” he said.
The father of the victim Palwinder Singh claimed that certain leaders from the Akali Dal were pressuring him to settle the case on some monetary and other considerations with bus owner Hardeep Singh “Dimpy” Dhillon, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader from Gidderbaha and a confidant of the Badal family. The case has generated a lot of controversy and politicians have jumped on the bandwagon to build vote banks.
