Close on the heels of unearthing of a government land scam in Ferozepur, another case of allotment of forestland to a private person allegedly in connivance with revenue officials has been reported from a village situated on the edge of Harike wetland.
According to information, the forest department had the possession as well as mutation of 113 acres of land at Ghatti Harike village, situated just 500 metres from the Harike wetland in Makhu.
On December 12, 2010, a private person allegedly in connivance with local revenue officials got the allotment of the 16.9-kanal land in his name, reports said.
When contacted, Sanjeev Tiwari, district forest officer, acknowledged that the land had been illegally allotted to one Manjit Singh and the sub-tehsildar, Makhu, had signed the deed documents. Repeated reminders had been sent to the deputy commissioner to cancel the allotment and record it in the name of the forest department, he said.
Deputy commissioner S Karuna Raju acknowledged the complaint filed by the district forest officer.
He said a probe by a joint team of forest and revenue officials had been ordered and law would take its own course.
