Will Bathinda get a Solid Waste Treatment Plant (SWTP)? The answer might be a few days away as the National Green Tribunal (NGT), looking into the case, has fixed the date for the final arguments in this case on February 6.

On Friday, deputy commissioner, Kamal Kishore Yadav and MCB commissioner Vipul Ujwal presented themselves in a hearing before the tribunal and replied to certain matters related to five issues raised by the tribunal. The previous hearing in the matter was held on January 20.

Yadav said that the administration has submitted that there was a proposal to develop a a green belt all along the SWTP and plantation for this purpose had been started.

"It was also submitted that adequate care has been taken to ensure that the polluted water from the plant does not seep into the canal. On the residents objection that the area will turn in to a waste dumping site we have apprised the tribunal that the solid waste is being dumped at the site for past more than 20 years and the area was also not a densely populated one," he said.

Residents of the area on the Mansa Road, where the proposed plant is to come up, led by Captain Mal Singh, have approached the tribunal demanding that the plant should be shifted as the area was thickly populated. They have also claimed that it was not appropriate to set up a plant there.

The plant, to come up on 20 acres, will cater to treatment of solid waste of 18 local bodies of Bathinda cluster and 350 tonnes of solid waste will be treated. The solid waste of all other local bodies will be ferried to this place. A New Delhi -based firm JITF Urban waste management company is lifting garbage from 18 local bodies.

However, in the absence of a solid waste management plant, the company was finding it tough to operate.
