Finally, body of Punjabi driver brought from Saudi Arabia

The body of a Saudi Arabia based Punjabi Sikh driver Devinder Singh was finally brought back to Gurusar Kaunke near Jagraon in Ludhiana district after obtaining various clearances from the Saudi government as well as Indian emigration.

Devinder Singh was killed in a road accident three months back in Saudi Arabia. He was a truck driver at a Dubai based transport company owned by Punjabis. His body was lying at a mortuary in Saudi Arabia since as the company was reluctant to pay the accident clearances initially.

A Malaysian Airlines plane carried the body to India which landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the wee hours on Monday. The cremation of the deceased took place at village Gurusar Kaunke on Monday evening. Devinder Singh is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

SPS Oberoi, a renowned philanthropist and Dubai based businessman, said the owners of the transport company had paid all the accidental penalties and other formalities amounting to Rs 7 lacs in this regard.

“Since the accidental clearances were not paid, bringing the body was delayed. But after we took the matter with the company, they were ready to pay the amount and co-operated in bringing the body back,” stated Oberoi.

Notably, the family has taken up the matter with Oberoi after they failed on every front.

The family has been assured by the company for the release of the pending salary.

The cremation witnessed high presence of villagers, including all prominent local leaders.

Oberoi assured that he would also work to get the life insurance claim in the favour of the deceased's family.

Oberoi disclosed that as many 6 bodies of Punjabis are lying in different mortuaries at Saudi Arabia.

He urged external affairs ministry to intervene and help the families in bringing back the bodies for their last rites.

Meanwhile, Union minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, when contacted, said Indian Consulate at Dubai and Indian Embassy of Saudi Arabia has given all help to return the body.

She assured that such cases would be taken up on priority by the Indian embassy and Indian consulate.
