After a delay of many months, Haryana sportspersons are set to receive cash rewards which they had won for international and national competitions that took place as early as 2013-2014.
A sum of Rs 70 crores shall be distributed at a prize giving function on July 28 at Panchkula among various Asiad, national games and other winners, according to a tweet by Haryana health, sports and youth affairs minister Anil Vij. Explaining the delay, Haryana government told the Punjab and Haryana high court that the state's budget for giving cash awards was exhausted on winners of medals in competitions such as Commonwealth Games, thus award money could not be disbursed to student medalists of national, international and state level championships.
The government's explanation came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by high court lawyer HC Arora, seeking issuance of directions to the state government to release cash awards to winners of medals of state and national level championships.
Seema Antil, Asian Games discuss gold medalist, members of the Indian kabaddi team (men and women) who won the Asian Games gold and Indian Men's hockey team captain Sardara Singh, who led the team to an Asian Games gold are among list of players who shall be awarded.
Out of the Rs 70 crore, Rs 28 crore will be distributed among medalists at international and national events during 2013-14. The remaining Rs 42 crore would be distributed among Asian Games, Para-Asian Games medalists of 2014.
