Even as the Amritsar municipal corporation has decided to hold the first meeting of the new House after a wait of almost five months, many projects may not get a go-ahead owing to lack of funds.
Ever since the municipal corporation elections, the civic body has not convened a single meeting. Now the first meeting of the new House is scheduled for January 29.
The MC, which is in dire need of money to fund development works, has pinned hopes on the government. It has urged the government to immediately grant Rs 100 crore for executing development projects in the city.
Talking to HT, Amritsar mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said, "Though the House will meet on January 29, many development works may not get a nod. The MC does not have much money. We had earlier asked the local bodies department for a grant of Rs 300-400 crore. Now we have asked them to immediately grant us Rs 100 crore so that the pace of development in the city does not suffer. Many road, sewerage and other projects in the city are pending owing to the fund crunch."
Arora said they had received instructions from the government not to approve any project till they get the funds. "Yet, we have included many key development projects in the agenda for the meeting. Amritsar faces many civic problems which need to be addressed at the earliest," he said.
