FIR against former SMO for sexual harassment

A case has been registered against a former senior medical officer (SMO) of civil hospital after a woman doctor alleged sexual harassment by him. Dr Karamvir Goyal, who is now working as a senior doctor of a private hospital, has been accused by a junior doctor, employed in another hospital, that she was harassed by Goyal when she went to him to get a medical fitness certificate.

The female doctor shot off a written complaint to the Jamalpur police station. The police have registered a case under Section 354 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against him.

The woman doctor has alleged that she had applied for the post of junior resident doctor and required a medical fitness certificate. She alleged that the accused sexually harassed her on pretext of her check up.

Goyal at present is the head of the department of internal medicine department at a private hospital, Chandigarh Road. The victim is a resident of Green Avenue and said she fled from the room of Goyal when she was harrasssed.

Investigation officer in the case assistant sub-inspector Swaran Singh said the police was investigating the matter. SHO of the police station Hardeep Singh said a case was registered when police received a written complaint from the victim. “We will probe the matter thoroughly,” he said.

According to police sources, the female doctor, who has accused Goyal was known to him even before she visited him allegedly for getting a medical certificate. Several attempts to talk to Goyal failed as he did not respond to the phone calls.
