In a rare expression of action against owner of a factory employing child labour, the city police have registered an FIR against the owner who had employed 14 child labourers. On Tuesday, the district task force formed to rescue child labourers raided a factory namely AK Fashion at Bal Singh Nagar and found that 14 child labourers were working at the site. The age of the children was found to be from 7-16 years.

Shockingly a seven-year-old child was also found at the site, who used to get a wage of Rs 50 per week. The police registered an FIR under different sections of the IPC against Ajay Chaudhary, owner of the factory at Salem Tabri police station, on Tuesday night.

Volunteers of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO, that is a part of the district task force had repeatedly claimed earlier that inaction of police against the offenders under the child welfare laws was the main reason that child labour in Ludhiana was thriving.

The police have registered a case under section 370 (Buying or disposing of any person as a slave), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), section 23/27/26 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 1986.
