Marred by delays, the process for mechanical sweeping of roads has now been intensified with the municipal corporation (MC) set to see a demonstration of a sweeper truck in action from Saturday.
The truck, belonging to a private firm, will sweep the Ferozepur road for seven days.
The MC has planned to go ahead with the demonstration despite floating tenders inviting companies to bid for the project.
“A firm has shown interest in the project, we will take the next decision after the demo,” said additional commissioner, Ghanshyam Thori.
The MC plans to use sweeper trucks to clean all major roads of the district with a total length of 47 km. The roads would include Mall Road, Old GT Road from Jalandhar Bypass to Dholewal Chowk, Chandigarh Road, Pakhowal Road, College Road, Rani Jhansi Road, Hambran Road, Gill Road, Dugri Road and Link Road.
MC officials said sweeper trucks would help clean roads in a better manner. “With heavy traffic on the city roads, manual sweeping was not done in a proper way,” they said.
