Five held in SAD supporter murder case at Phool, Sidhana still at large

The police have arrested five persons in connection with the murder of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supporter outside the court complex at Phool near here on Friday, though the main accused, leader of the People's Party of Punjab, Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha Sidhana is still at large.

The arrested have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, former sarpanch of Mehraj, Tarsem Singh, Niranjan Singh, Surinder Singh and Ranjit Singh all residents of Mehraj village. All the five were arrested from the village late Friday night.

The police have booked as many as 13 people in this case including those arrested. The others who have been persons booked include Lakha Sidhana, Sewak Singh from Phool, Kaur Singh from Dialpura Bhaika, Chhati Singh from Bhairupa, Gurjant Singh, Pargat Singh and Balraj Singh, all residents of Mehraj, and Mundi, a resident of Sidhana village.

Gurvir Singh alias Goldy, a resident of Mehraj village, was allegedly shot dead by Sidhans and his accomplices outside the court complex in Phool on Friday afternoon when Gurvir was accompanying another SAD leader for filing nomination papers for Mehraj nagar panchayat.

Both Gurvir and Sidhana, who were having old rivalry, had entered into a confrontation inside the court complex. During the fight, they came out of the court complex where somebody from Sidhana's group shot at Goldy from a rifle. The bullet hit his chest and he died on the spot.
