A pall of gloom descended on Halimwala village, 32 km from Fazilka, after five members of a family died in a road accident at Kotkapura in Faridkot district on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Gurdial Singh, 55; his wife, Vimla Rani, 50; sons Harjinder Singh, 25, and Ramesh, 22; and granddaughter Aarti, 13. Gurdial’s daughter Sunita Rani, 30, suffered serious injuries in the accident and is battling for her life at the Kotkapura civil hospital.

The family was on its way to Faridkot early in the morning when the Swift Dzire car they were travelling in rammed into a tree at Kotkapura, 12 km from the town. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Harjinder was driving the car. The impact was so strong that the vehicle swirled and landed in the nearby fields.

Gurdial’s brother Baggan Singh said the family was visiting the town to pay homage at the shrine of Baba Farid and meet a local family for Harjinder’s marriage.

After conducting the post-mortem examination, the police handed over the bodies to the relatives. The bodies reached the native village in the afternoon. People from adjoining areas too thronged the village for the last rites. Shops in the area remained closed to express solidarity with the family.
