The local police claim to have arrested five members of a robbers' gang while they were planning to commit a robbery on Tuesday.

Those arrested included Pushpinder Singh, the kingpin of the gang, who was wanted by the Patiala police in many cases and was a proclaimed offender.

Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a place at Sandaur near Malerkotla and arrested the accused, who were planning to rob car passengers on the national highway.

The others arrested are Bachitar Singh, Jarnail Singh, Uma Shanker Yadav and Jaswant Singh.

The police recovered two .32-bore pistols, three .315-bore pistols and a .12-bore pistol along with 11 cartridges. Three stolen motorcycles were also recovered from the accused.

SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said that during the preliminary interrogation the accused had confessed that they had formed a group and committed robberies at different places in Punjab and Haryana.

Bhullar said Pushpinder was facing two cases in Patiala district and was a proclaimed offender. Jaswant had been released on bail after spending four years in jail under the NDPS Act, he added.

"We are carrying out a detailed investigation, including from where they had got the illegal weapons and at which places they had committed the robberies," the SSP said.
