A foetus was found near railway tracks in Sahnewal on Friday evening. It was not developed enough and its gender had not been determined yet.
Guddu of the Bhero Munna area of Sahnewal saw a foetus lying near the railway tracks and he immediately sounded the police.
On being informed, the Sahnewal police reached at the spot and took the foetus in their possession and sent it to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination.
Inspector Anil Bhanot, station house officer of the Sahnewal police station, said a case was registered against an unidentified woman under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of body) in this context.
The police suspected that it to be a case of an unmarried woman throwing the foetus after an abortion.
The police would check the record of hospitals, nursing homes and midwives to know about the woman who had undergone an abortion.
