A businessman was killed when a Maruti Swift Dzire car (PB08-DK-5100) he was travelling in rammed into a stationary truck due to dense fog at Khalsa College railway overbridge around 2.30am on Friday.
The victim has been identified as Deepak Sonik, 39, of Dilbagh Nagar Extension in Jalandhar. Sonik’s wife Jyoti, 35, and son Gopi, 14, who were injured, were rushed to a private hospital.
The Soniks were on their way back to Jalandhar from Phagwara where they had gone to attend the ring ceremony. The victim could not spot the truck due to dense fog. Parking lights of the truck were also not on.
Bus stand police post in-charge Major Singh said Sonik died on the spot. The truck driver, Manoj Kumar, has been arrested and a case under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him, he added.
The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem.
