Punjabi folk singer Manpreet Akhtar (55), sister of famous Punjabi singer Dilshad Akhtar, died of brain haemorrhage on Sunday at a local hospital.
Music teacher in a government school, Manpreet was known for her classical style of singing and her songs from Punjabi and Hindi movies. “Tujhe yaad na meri aye” in Bollywood movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” was sung by her. Her other popular numbers are “Beriye Ni”, “Nikdi sui” and “Bas ek gera giddhe vich”, apart from various folk songs.
She was buried here in the afternoon. Prominent singers Harbhajan Mann, Pammi Bai, and Babu Singh Mann visited her house to comfort the bereaved family. Harbhajan Mann lauded her role in promoting Punjabi Sufi singing and preserving the old traditions of Punjabi music. Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed profound grief over the demise of Manpreet Akhtar, and said she had achieved great fame and respect in the film industry because of her dedication and complete mastery over the art of singing. “She carried forward the legacy of her brother, late Dilshad Akhtar, in a very dignified manner,” Sukhbir added.
