To increase the forest cover in the district from 1.9% of the total geographical area to 5%, the forest department has prepared a roadmap for a massive plantation drive. The department, on Friday, convened a meeting of representatives of all government and private institutions, non-government organisations, religious institutions and various clubs at the office of the deputy commissioner under the chairmanship of the DC Dr Basant Garg.
Presenting a roadmap for the plantation drive in the district, divisional forest officer Dr Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari said, "To increase the forest cover, it is essential to include the non-forest land of government, non- government institutions and panchayat land in the drive."
"Most of the roads originating from the city have been widened, resulting in less space available with forest department for plantation purpose. Therefore, it is essential to go in for plantation on the non-forest land," Tiwari said.
He said, "The drive will start from July 11, World Population Day, with the motto of 'Each one, Plant one, Save one'.
Institutions can submit their demand for saplings before July 2. Apart from this, the department is also planning to plant two lakh saplings on its own land in the coming monsoon season."
Additional deputy commissioner (D) Sonali Giri and other government officials, members of NGOs, principals of various private schools and colleges were present at the meeting.
