Former BJP MLA from Lahaul Spiti, Ram Lal Markandey, said robbery cases were on the rise in the monasteries of the tribal district, which created “fear of insecurity among the residents”.
Addressing mediapersons at Kullu, he described the “utter failure” of police to solve the robbery cases, which led to “increase the morale of offenders to execute crime” in the district.
“On November 13, 2013, a monk native of Lahaul Spiti, Dorje Lundup, was assassinated by robbers in Tirasang monastery in Kinnaur district, which led to fear of safety of life for monastery keepers,” said Markandey.
He alleged that the local police had failed to solve the case even after more than two months of the crime. Markandey said, “We demand the state government to entrust the probe of the assassination in Tirasang monastery to the central bureau of investigation (CBI).” He said that they would also send a memorandum to the state government regarding this matter.
Providing a written detail of robbery cases of Lahaul Spiti since 1975 to 2001, the former MLA said 11 cases of robbery had been registered in the district, which occurred at Gondhla, Gemur, Shashur, Triloktnath, Tayul, Kardang, Lari, Mayar, Ropsang, and Guru-ghantal monastery. “But not even a single case has been solved by the police, which is a matter of grave concern,” added Markandey.
