Former minister among 24 booked for blocking road

As many as 24 people, including a former minister, have been booked by the district police for blocking traffic on the busy national highway-15 near Harike headworks on the Amritsar-Bathinda road on Monday.

The Congress workers, led by former minister Inderjit Singh Zira, had, had held the protest on Sunda to protest against the alleged delay in the lifting of paddy from the grain markets.

Commuters had to face problems for hours following the protest. The police had also resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the protesters.

Finally, deputy commissioner DPS Kharbanda intervened and assured earliest redressal of their grievances.

Agitators alleged that they were facing hardships in the grain markets as the government had failed to make proper arrangements for the purchase and lifting of foodgrains.

Meanwhile, procurement officials said that high moisture content was delaying the lifting of paddy.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Makhu police also booked 23 by name and 60-70 unidentified persons under Section 8 of the National Highway Act for blocking a road.
