Police arrested four people including two women for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to extort money from a middle aged farmer and his paramour on Thursday.

Two accused along with their three male accomplices shot a lewd video of the duo and later demanded Rs 20 lakh from them. The accused blackmailed them of sharing the video on social networking sites, if the money was not paid.

The farmer paid Rs 14 lakh to them in two installments and complained to Dehlon Police on Wednesday.

The police lodged a first information report (FIR) against Sarbjit Kaur of Tibba Pul, Gurjit Kaur of Amarpura of Sangrur and their accomplices Malkit Singh of Malerkotla, Balwinder Singh of Sorgarh Cheeme village of Sangrur and Mani of Dhuri.

The police have arrested four of the accused except Mani of Dhuri who is on the run. Rs 7.40 lakh has been recovered from their possession. The police produced the accused before the court on Thursday which remanded the accused to two days in police custody.

A case has been registered following the statement of Sikandar Singh, 55, of Sokal Khedi of Payal. Sikandar Singh told the police that he along with his 48-year-old female friend went to farm house of the accused Sarbjit Kaur on September 22. He added that when they were sitting in the room Malkit Singh, Balwinder Singh and Mani had come there and started thrashing them and made their lewd video after forcing them to remove their clothes.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP city-3) Ratan Singh Brar said that Sikandar Singh stated that the accused threatened to upload their video on social networking sites and of sending CDs of the footage to their families if they failed to pay Rs 20 lakh to them.

“The accused detained Sikandar’s woman friend as hostage and forced him to bring money. Sikandar brought `8 lakh following which they freed his female friend,” said the ADCP.

“On September 23, Sikandar Singh paid Rs 6 lakh to Gurjit Kaur. But when the accused started demanding more, he decided to file a police complaint,” said the ADCP.

Dehlon police station SHO inspector Amandeep Singh said soon after lodging a FIR, the police arrested Malkit Singh, Balwinder Singh, Sarbjit Kaur and Gurjit Kaur. The accused have been booked under Sections 342 (wrongful restraint), 354-C (capturing image of woman in a private act), 384 (extortion), 389 (putting person in fear of acquisition of offence) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of the IT Act.
