A retired army official was allegedly beaten to death by a wine contractor and his aides who later disposed of the body by throwing it into a canal in Sudhar. The body was recovered by the police on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as retired Subedar Surjit Singh, 55, of Rattowal village. He used to ferry goods on a cart to earn a living.
The police have booked four persons — wine contractor Baljinder Singh, Ashwani Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh and Rajinder Kumar — in the case.
On Monday evening, when the deceased was on his way back to his home, he stopped at a liquor shop and consumed alcohol. The four accused suspected that the victim used to supply liquor in the area illegally in the garb of his cart.
They argued with Surjit and started beating him up with sticks and sharp-edged weapons. Later, they threw him in the canal nearby.
Surjit’s wife filed a complaint at the Sudhar police station, following which the police registered a case under sections 302(murder), 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) and 201(causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
The accused were absconding since the case was registered against them. DSP Naveen Kumar said the police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
