At least four smugglers have been arrested by the Jalandhar rural police, who on Friday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of gun-runners.
Jalandhar police (rural) chief YS Hayer told media persons that 10 locally-made pistols and 22 live cartridges have been seized from the gang. The gang members were arrested from a roadside eatery near Kartarpur town, 25 km from here, Thursday night.
Hayer said that the kingpin, Jangli Shah from Bihar, would get illegally manufactured weapons from Bihar and sell these to criminal gangs operating in Punjab. Shah is among those arrested.
Hayer said during questioning Shah told police he had supplied over 80 weapons to various gangs in Punjab in recent months. Shah procured the locally-made illicit weapons at cheaper rates from Bihar and sold these at much higher price in Punjab.
Punjab police will coordinate with their Bihar counterparts to nab the suppliers of these weapons in that state.
