Police on Tuesday arrested four men for murdering a 70-year-old cigarette seller at Sector 29 on March 23 after robbing him of Rs 1,800 for getting money for Holi celebrations.
The police said that they had also recovered all the belongings of the deceased Sarju Ram, including the cigarettes. The money, however, had been spent by the accused identified as Mohan Lal (25), a resident of Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, Vishal alias Bovdiya (19), a resident of Hallomajra, Shera (18) and Kawaljeet Singh (18), both residents of Sector 29.
After a tip-off, the police set up a special naka near Sai Baba Mandir in Sector 29 on Tuesday and nabbed all the accused.
Assistant superintendent of police Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said that the accused Mohan Lal was a roadside vendor, while Vishal, Shera and Kawaljeet worked in a band.
Inspector Amanjot Singh said that the injured cigarette-seller was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32 where he succumbed to his injuries.
A case has been registered under Sections 392 (robbery) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
