punjab Updated: Sep 25, 2014 00:27 IST

Four people, including a CRPF jawan, were killed and another seriously injured in a road accident that occurred near Benra village on Ludhiana-Sangrur road on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as CRPF jawan Gurjent Singh, 25, a resident of Moddi Khera village, Fazilka district; driver of truck Jagroop Singh of Khai Nihal Singh Wala village of Moga district; truck cleaner Karam Singh of Mallan village in Mukatsr district and tractor driver Makkhan Singh, 24, of Benra village in Sangrur district.

The injured Amrik Singh of Benra village, who was sitting on the tractor, was admitted to DMC hospital in Ludhiana after the incident. The CRPF jawan was coming from Zirakpur when he took lift from a truck driver coming from Ludhiana.

Investigating officer assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurnam Singh said: "The incident took place around 5am when a truck coming from Ludhiana hit a tractor trolley from behind."

He said due to darkness the driver of the tractor could not see the truck parked on the roadside and in order to overtake the tractor another truck coming from behind hit the tractor resulting into the death of four people.

The bodies were handed over to the families after the post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the driver of the truck, who had parked the truck on the roadside without indications.
