Three people, including a father-son duo, were killed in a fatal road mishap near Malerkotla here on Thursday night.

The deceased people were identified as Jarnail Singh, 56, his 27-year-old son, and Inderjit Singh, 20, all residents of Malerkotla. Another person, Mohammad Imran, received serious injuries in the accident.

The incident happened around 10.30pm on Thursday near the Kup Kalan village on the Ludihiana-Malerktola road.

Investigating officer (IO) Jarnail Singh said the incident occurred when the car of the deceased went out of control after one of the rear tyres gave way.

Police said the car crossed the divider and smashed into an auto-rickshaw on the other side of the road.

All three people died immediately, while an injured Imran was rushed to the local civil hospital; he was referred further to the Government Rajindera Medical College in Patiala, where his condition was stated to be serious.

Locals and commuters gathered at the spot had rescued Imran. The car was so damaged that it took the police around two hours for the police and locals to extricate the bodies, using cutters.

The police said Jarnail, who was suffering from jaundice, had gone with his neighbor Inderjit and Imran to consult a doctor in Ludhiana. On their way back, they had picked Jarnail's son Sukhdev, an architect at the public works development. Sukhdev had got married recently, on February 4.

The dead bodies of the deceased were handed over to the family members after postmortem.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Nanaksar village, died after an unidentified vehicle rammed into his motorcycle on the Ludihiana-Malerktola road.
