The four major contenders vying for the Lok Sabha seat from Ludhiana— from Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the lone independent candidate — filed nominations with the deputy commissioner-cum-returning officer (DC-cum-RO) Rajat Agarwal on Monday.

Three of the four candidates — SAD’s Manpreet Singh Ayali, Congress’s Ravneet Singh Bittu and independent candidate Simarjit Singh Bains — have listed their closest kin as their covering candidates.

The covering candidate for Ayali is his brother, Harbir Singh Ayali, while Bittu’s covering candidate is his cousin, Khanna MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli, followed by Balwinder Singh Bains, elder brother and covering candidate of Bains.

However, AAP’s candidate Harvinder Singh Phoolka has not given any name for the covering candidate.

Despite the instructions of the election commission (EC), the SAD-BJP cadres brought cavalcade of vehicles, while the Congress mobilised hundreds of workers in the form of a rally on the Ferozepur Road.

In order to give due importance to party cadres, who were enthusiastic to accompany Ayali to the mini-secretariat, Ayali arranged a meeting at the newly opened office at Gill Road.

It was a celebration in the Congress camp as well as a hotel owned by Congress leader Jassi Khangura was festooned with Congress flags and frills in tricolour. Later, a large number of Congress workers listened to Bittu’s address before he marched to the mini-secretariat to file his nomination papers.

Despite Ayali’s requests, his party cadres insisted to accompany him to the mini-secretariat.

Consequently, in violation of EC orders, he could not limit the number of persons accompanying him to five. Similarly, Bittu and Bains also came with hordes of supporters. Therefore, all three were served notices by the DC-cum-RO.

Interestingly, Phoolka, along with his supporters, cycled from his office at Pakhowal Road to the district administration complex. The AAP candidate has been promoting cycling during his campaigning.
