Four rocket shelles were found in a pond in Bungal village, 15 km, from here, on Sunday morning. A shopkeeper Nek Chand, who is an ex- serviceman, first noticed these shells in the area and informed the police. The police than called in the army to defuse the shells.

The shopkeeper claimed that he noticed a bag in the waste dumping area that seemed suspicious.
"The bag was heavy. I assumed that it was some of the material from my own shop, which I could have thrown off by mistake. However, when I opened the bags I saw the shells and realised that these were rocket launchers," he claimed.

Trade in such scrap rampant
Such abandoned shells are a favourite of scrap dealers due to the large quantity of metal in it. They indulge in its buying and selling even at the risk of their lives. After each army exercise near Chakki bridge, scores of dealers are seen making a beeline to the area to try their luck and find some scrap to sell. This is even as some of the scrap they could find might well blast any moment, as there can be no guarantees that the waste they collect is safe to dispose of, let alone collect.
