Visitors to the markets of SAS Nagar don’t need to pay for parking for now with the paid-parking contract ending on April 14 . Though this brings huge relief to residents of the place, it may be short-lived as the SAS Nagar municipal corporation (MC) will take a call on the matter in its House meeting on April 19.
Paid parking was introduced in SAS Nagar in 2015 and the contract was given to JTS Constructions for managing the parking lots in the markets of Phases 5, 3B2 and 7. The MC earned Rs 84 lakh from parking lots during this time. The SAD-BJP and Congress have been on loggerheads over the issue which has dominated the MC House meetings since September 2015. The five-member panel constituted by the House has in the past recommended scrapping of paid parking.
On the other hand, the MC commissioner has favoured paid parking reasoning that this would generate annual revenue up to Rs 3.6 crore and SAS Nagar mayor Kulwant Singh has also been in favour of it.
“It is a good system but owing to political gains, is being discarded. I am in its favour and would urge the House in the upcoming meeting to continue the system. The House would take the final call,” he said.
