Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal declared that that party’s secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and general secretary Naresh Gujral would be the SAD candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections from Punjab. Both are RS members and have been picked for re-nomination. Both Dhindsa and Gujral’s term will end next month.
A statement released from the party head office here on Tuesday said both would file their nomination papers at 10.30am on Wednesday at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
Five RS seats are falling vacant from Punjab, of which SAD is in a position to win two, BJP one, and Congress two, as per their strength in the assembly. The election is slated for March 21.
Besides Dhindsa and Gujral, the term of Avinash Rai Khanna (BJP), Manohar Gill and Ashwani Kumar (both Congress) is also coming to an end next month. From the Congress, among the frontrunners are former state party chief Partap Singh Bajwa, senior leader Lal Singh and MLA Sunil Jakhar, it has been reported.
The BJP is likely to field former MP Navjot Singh Sidhu for the elections to the Upper House.
