Shiv Sena (Hindustan) suspended leader Deepak Kamboj (35), accused of stage-managing the February 16 attack on self with two friends for publicity and more security, was on Wednesday placed under arrest at the local civil hospital after checking in for the treatment for his heart and leg.
He was on the run since a local court had denied him bail on May 15. A hunt for him was on for 10 days. Sources said police had given him ample time to disappear until he had secured bail from the high court. On Tuesday morning, Sikh organisations had blocked traffic at BMC Chowk here and marched to the police commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum demanding Kamboj’s arrest.
After his arrest, Kamboj told the media that he had been in Chandigarh all this while until his family had brought him back to Jalandhar on Tuesday night and moved him to hospital. “I am innocent,” he said, “Why would somebody hire shooters to kill self?”
Station house officer (SHO) concerned Sukhwir Singh said four cops would guard Kamboj’s hospital room. Sena leader’s friends Gaurav Sondhi (who runs a printing press at Dhan Mohalla here) and Supinder Singh (a property dealer at Maqdoompura) were arrested on April 29. Kamboj is accused of plotting the attack on self outside Shiv Jyoti Public School at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar here.
