The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday disposed of the petition filed by shopkeepers who have their shops in the area for the Galiara project in Amritsar, directing the Amritsar municipal corporation commissioner to pass appropriate orders on their representation seeking an alternative site, within two months.
The petition was filed by shopkeepers who claim to have been running their businesses on Tehbazaari basis at Putligarh Chowk in Amritsar. However, they were shifted out of their place of business to a place opposite Cantonment police station. The petitioner said they had then set up their small shops/khokhas at the new place. However, the petitioners' khokhas had now been demolished after the government proposed to widen the old GT road in Amritsar.
The petition seeks directions to the authorities to give them an alternative site so that they may be able to earn their livelihood.
While disposing of the petition, the division bench of acting chief justice Ashutosh Mohunta and justice HS Sidhu ordered, "After hearing the counsel for the petitioners, we dispose of this writ petition with a direction to the MC commissioner (of Amritsar) to consider the representation filed by the petitioners and pass appropriate orders in accordance with the law within a period of two months from the date of receipt of the certified copy of this order."
The petitioners have also submitted a representation in this regard on August 20, but till date no decision thereon has been taken by the Amritsar administration.
