The district police have nabbed a member of a gang which had been targeting bank ATMs in the state. Mohit Sharma, a resident of Meerut (UP) was arrested by a team of Tanda police on Tuesday night when he was conducting a recce of an ATM at Adda Cholang.
A .315 bore pistol with live cartridges, two mobile phones, four ATM cards and a motorcycle were recovered from him. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Narinder Bhargav said that the arrested man was part of a 7-member inter-state gang which had looted Rs 10.50 lakh from an SBI ATM in Bhagtan Bhai Ka in June last and had made attempts at several other places. The same gang could be involved in ATM loots in the district, he said. "From preliminary investigations, it has emerged that the gang would reach Punjab from Delhi during the night and after committing the crime, would return to Delhi," the SSP said.
He revealed that with the looted money the gang had built a house in Ghaziabad. It is notable that cash worth Rs 22 lakh was looted from two ATMs of Punjab National Bank in December last and around Rs 18 lakh from another ATM in June. All these cases are yet unsolved. The SSP claimed that the recent arrest would help police crack the cases.
