The Rohtak police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang involved in ATM (automated teller machine) robberies, arrested one of its members and seized an ATM from a sports utility vehicle (SUV) recovered from his possession.
While giving this information, Rohtak superintendent of police (SP) Shashank Anand said the police had arrested Vinay, a resident of Poli village of Jind district, while three of his accomplices managed to flee.
The SP said the recovered ATM was stolen from the State Bank of India’s branch in Panipat district. The police had also recovered a welding machine, two pistols, 30 cartridges and an LPG cylinder from the SUV.
According to the police, the bank officials said when the ATM was taken away, Rs 16.25 lakh were loaded in the machine. However, the machine could not be opened yet and they were looking for a safe place to cut the machine with welding machines.
The SP said that during the interrogation, the accused confessed that he had been involved in two ATM robberies, one in Kathura of Sonepat and another in Gohana, during the past three months.
The police have booked him under various sections of the IPC and the Arms Act.
The police did not disclose the names of the other accused who managed to give them a slip, but said the efforts were on to arrest them.
