The city police claim to have busted a gang of robbers targeting Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) with the arrest of three members of the gang, during a raid at a house on the Kapurthala Road on Wednesday late night. A fourth suspect, Nirmal Nima, considered to be the kingpin of the gang managed to flee, sources in the police said.

The three arrested suspects have been identified as Shamsher Singh Shera, his brother Dharminder Singh Dhami and their relative Davinder Singh. All are natives of Chheharta in Amritsar district.
Addressing a press conference, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajinder Singh and additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) J Elanchezhian told the media that the gang operated in border areas of the state in Amritsar, Batala, Majitha and Chheharta for the last two years. They looted the ATMs by using gas cutters to open these.

"The gang was involved in looting three ATMs with Nima as the kingpin. They had looted `20 lakh from a ATM and we also suspect their hand in unsuccessful bids to loot ATMs in nine cases," said the DCP. He added that two of these unsuccessful ATM robbery attempts were in the city. "The same also managed to burgle `4 lakh from a house on July 15," he added. The four-member gang is also involved in snatching 30 mobile phones, robbing a car and a bike in Amritsar. The police have also recovered two pistols, four live cartridges, two gas cylinders, one cutter, and one stolen Maruti car from them.
