The district (rural) police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of highway robbers with the arrest of five of its members and recovery of stolen property, weapons and narcotics from their possession.
After getting a tip-off that a gang of highway robbers was active in Goraya area, a police team led by superintendent of police (SP) Rajinder Singh laid a trap and arrested five members of the gang, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Yurinder Singh told reporters.
The accused have been identified as Soni Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh, Mandeep Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh and Devinder singh, all residents of Hoshiarpur district. The SSP said that during the preliminary interrogation the accused have confessed to their involvements in several highway robberies and some of them were committed in September.
Personal search of the accused led to the recovery of two pistols with several cartridges, 220 gm heroin, one stolen Innova car , 11 mobiles and some gold ornaments, the SSP added.
The accused have named five more members of the gang as Sonu, Talwinder Singh alias Tota, Amandeep Singh, Raja and Govinda, he said, adding efforts were on to arrest the absconding gang members.
Regarding the modus operandi of the gang, the SSP said that they used to target commuters on the national highway, especially young couples. After forcing the driver to stop the vehicle, the gang used to loot them at gunpoint, he said.
Two of the accused, Soni Kumar and Sukhwinder Singh, were history-sheeters and had been declared proclaimed offenders in some of the cases registered against them, SSP added.
