The local police claim to have busted a gang of inter-state criminals by arresting five of its members after a shootout at Mandi Ahmedgarh in this district on Monday night.
The police also recovered two foreign-made pistols and three country-made pistols from the accused.
SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said here on Tuesday that acting on a tip-off, the police raided an abandoned factory where the accused were planning a robbery.
Sidhu said that on seeing the police party, the accused started firing at the cops. The police returned the fire and overpowered the criminals, he said.
The accused have been identified as Gagandeep Singh, Avarjeet Singh, Mohammad Waseem, Gahiya Khan and Mohammad Iftikar.
"The investigation is on to know as to from where the accused procured the foreign-made weapons," said Sidhu.
The police also seized two cars from the accused that they had stolen from Amritsar recently.
Several criminal cases have been registered against the accused at Sangrur, Barnala, Amritsar and Shimla police stations.
"Twelve cases have been registered against Gaganjit, 10 against Avarjeet, five against Waseem, two, including a murder case, against Iftikar and one against Gahiya," Sidhu said.
He said the police also arrested one Rajwinder Singh, a resident of Mehta in Amritsar district, and recovered a .315 pistol from him, which he had bought from accused Gagandeep for Rs 10,000
