Gang of transformer thieves busted

The local police on Wednesday have claimed to bust a gang of thieves who stole electric transformers and have seized more than a quintal copper wire from them.


The police have arrested six persons, including two junkyard owners, and seized 1.70 quintal of copper wire, .315 bore pistol with two live cartridges and Rs 50, 000 from their possession.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said, acting on a tip-off, the local police arrested the accused near the railway bridge on Dhuri road.

The accused have been identified as Jaswant Singh, Karamjit Singh, Jagwinder Kumar, Ravi Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Mohammad Rashid.

Bhullar said the accused have confessed to committing the thefts and selling the stolen material to Sanjay and Rashid, junkyard owners.

The accused admitted to being active for the past four years and committing around 32 thefts in Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa districts, the police said.

As many as 17 criminal cases have been registered against the accused at different police stations.
