Gangs of robbers busted; 22 held

The local police claimed to have busted three gangs of robbers and snatchers by arresting 22 people on Saturday. Claiming to solve almost 50% of robberies that occurred during the past two months, the police also recovered stolen goods and jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh from the possession of the accused.

The local police claimed to have busted three gangs of robbers and snatchers by arresting 22 people on Saturday.


Claiming to solve almost 50% of robberies that occurred during the past two months, the police also recovered stolen goods and jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh from the possession of the accused.

Senior superintendent of police Hardyal Singh Mann said the arrest of robbers has come as a breather for the local police as the gangs' members were active in different areas of the city and peripheral areas.

He said acting on a tip-off, a special team under supervision of SHO, Tripuri, Shaminder Singh raided an abandoned building of a hospital at Faggan Majra village and arrested five accused while they were planning a robbery.

The accused have been identified as Gurnam Singh, Simran Singh, Sukhwinder Singh Soni, Vishal and Vikram Singh, against whom 15 criminal cases were registered in different police stations.

The police also recovered lethal arms and sharp-edged weapons from their possession.

The police said during preliminary investigation, accused Simran and Vikram, confessed to committing more than 25 offences of snatching and burglary in various parts of Patiala.

Mann said in another major breakthrough, the local police had arrested five people from near cremation ground in Badungar Colony. The police claimed to have recovered three motorcycles, two Activa scooters, 40 gm of gold and 12 gm of silver ornaments, 15 mobile phones, 10 ladies purse and some other household items from the accused.

"The police have started investigation to recover more stolen goods from the accused. A number of cases were pending against them in various police stations," he said.

Meanwhile, the police have also arrested another seven members of 'Pardi gang', a few days after the arrest of five of its members.

Mann said the accused confessed that they were around 10 people, who were divided into two groups. One group conducted a recce of the area before executing their robbery plan during the night.

"The accused belonged to infamous 'Paardi gang' in Madhya Pardesh and they confessed to have committed robberies in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh," he said. The police recovered jewellery worth Rs 11 lakh from the gang members.

In a different case, the police also arrested two people who were involved in stealing gas cylinders from different government schools in Tripuri and Bakhsiwala areas. The police also recovered eight gas cylinders from the accused.

The robbery and snatching victims were also called on the spot and were asked to come through proper channel to get their assets back.
