Gangster Navdeep Singh, alias Chatha, 28, a resident of Dabwali in Haryana, was arrested after a brief encounter with the police near Rama Mandi, close to Punjab-Haryana border, here on Tuesday night.
This was disclosed by inspector general of police, Bathinda zone, SK Asthana, at a press conference on Wednesday. He said the police had got a tip-off that some gangsters were roaming around Rama Mandi.
“A check post was set up on the road leading from Desu Jodha to Sekhu village. Two cars came from Desu Jodha side and the occupants of one of them fired at the cops. The police returned the fire, but no one was injured. In all, four rounds were fired. The three car occupants ran into fields, police chased them and nabbed Chatha. His two accomplices managed to flee,” said Asthana. The lone occupant in the second car also managed to flee.
Asthana said police have identified the accomplices and a search operation to locate them is on.
The police have impounded two cars and seized a .32-bore US-made revolver, a .32-bore pistol, a magazine and 25 cartridges.
Chatha, a member of Gurpreet Sekhon gang, is facing about 15 criminal cases, including those of murder, attempt to murder, theft and dacoity, in Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Jagraon, and in Haryana and Rajasthan.
