Accusing the local police of mishandling the cases involving illegal cattle smuggling, several cow protection activists blocked the national highway-1 near here on Tuesday.

Activists claimed that the police were informed around 6 am that three cows tied up with ropes had been spotted near the NH-1 but no one took note of the information till noon. Later, two cows were found dead, while one was seriously injured.

Activists suspect that the cows had fell off a vehicle laden with cattle being transported to illegal slaughterhouses in the neighbouring districts of Uttar Pradesh.

"Had the cops took note of tip provided by the Gau Raksha Dal, the smugglers could have been arrested. Police intentionally did not react as several of them are hand in glove with the cow smugglers," alleged Anil Kumar, an activist.

Illegal transportation of cattle to UP is a major nuisance and this year the Haryana government had formed a dedicated police team led by an additional director general of police (ADGP) rank officer to check the issue.

Agitated protesters said that several policemen were involved in the illegal cattle smuggling and demanded action against them.

Deputy superintendent of police Ramesh Gulia rubbished the charges of delay in the police action and said that the police teams were working to nab the smugglers.
