A day before Lt Gen Bikram Singh assumes office as Chief of the Army Staff, there was joy in his ancestral village Kaler Ghuman near Rayya on Wednesday.

According to villagers, Singh's family lived here for long. Though Bikram Singh was not born here, he occasionally visited the place as a child. Joginder Lal of the village, who retired from the army, said, "It is a proud moment for the village. Father of Lt Gen Bikram Singh was also in the army and lived here. The villagers are happy to have received the news."

Lal said he now lived in the ancestral house of Lt Gen Bikram Singh.

Villager Harjit Singh said, "As soon as we heard the news, sweets were distributed in the village. Piara Singh, father of Lt Gen Bikram Singh, lived here long back and his son reaching such heights makes us proud."
