“The first thing that speaks for us is our clothes and how we wear them,” feels Ludhiana-based fashion designer Sonu Gandhi, whilst in Amritsar recently to showcase her works in the fourth edition of Blenders Pride Punjab International Fashion Week that started its journey in Jalandhar on September 26 and culminated in Chandigarh on Saturday.

Sonu’s collection at the fashion show displayed the festive look with flattering silhouettes. “With my theme being Indian royalty, I gave a hint of modern touch to my dresses. Gowns, shararas and stitched saris comprised the line in brocades, velvets and silks,” she said.

Sonu, an M SC in home science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, says it is her love for clothes and to be dressed well that took her on the path of fashion designing. In 2000, she opened her store in Ludhiana with the support of her husband. Drawing inspiration from the Indian culture, Sonu designs outfits with a contemporary touch. She recently opened a store in Jalandhar and also turned an image consultant wherein she takes classes for young brides-to-be on how to improve their self-image.

“The world of fashion,” says Sonu, “demands a lot of innovation which means thinking out of the box. At same time, you must have faith in yourself.” Next, she wants to open her own institute of fashion technology. The shows in Punjab were a curtain raiser to the main event of Punjab International Fashion Week, which will be held at Hotel Aveda in Ludhiana from October 3 to October 6.
