Nearly four-and-a-half-years after a teenage girl and her boyfriend killed seven members of her family at Kabpulpur village, 15 km from here, the district and sessions court convicted the duo and their accomplice on Tuesday.

The main convicts have been identified as Sonam Dagar (23) and Navin Dagar (24), son of Kapur Singh, both hailing from same village. Their accomplice, Jaivir, who provided sleeping pills and poisonous substance to Sonam was also convicted.

Sonam and Navin who belonged to same clan were having an affair. Both used to study at Rohtak town and started liking each other but after Sonam's parents got to know of their affair they asked her to discontinue studies and restricted her to home.

Apprehending that her family will not accept their relationship, they eliminated Sonam's parents (Surender, 45, and Promila, 40), brother Arvind (15), grandmother Bhuro Devi (70) and three cousins Vishal (10), Sonika (12) and Monica (14).

Marriage within the same clan is considered a taboo in the rural Haryana and panchayats are dead opposed to such a relationship.

On the night of September 14, 2009, Sonam mixed some sedative in the dinner ('rotis' and milk) of her family members and strangled them with rope with the help of Navin after they fell unconscious.

To avoid suspicion on her, Sonam laid down in bathroom disguising to be in an unconscious state and tried to portray the incident a result of property dispute or loot.

However, police solved the case within a few days after tracking the call details of Sonam and Navin. Jaivir Kumar, who provided sleeping pills and poisonous substance to Sonam, was also convicted. However, the court acquitted Omvir, who used to run a chemist shop at Chhara village of Jhajjar district, from where sleeping pills were procured.

Sonam and Navin were convicted under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, while Jaivir was convicted under Sections 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.

The quantum of sentence will be announced on March 6.

Villagers seek death for culprits
Terming the incident a blot on the relationship of daughter and parents, Sonam's grandfather Takdir Singh and uncles Karambir and Bhupinder have demanded severest punishment for the accused to set an example to others. Shocked by the brazen incident, they demanded death for the culprits.
