Police on Wednesday booked an SAS Nagar resident after a 21-year-old girl committed suicide at Khalsa College hostel on Tuesday night.
Police said the girl, a BSc student, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her hostel room when her roommates had gone for dinner.
When the girls got back, they saw the girl struggling to breathe, and cut her dupatta. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
Police immediately sealed the room, and questioned the roommates, who said the girl had been depressed for the past many days and barely talked to them.
"According to the suicide note recovered from the room, she was upset over strained relations with her boyfriend Gurwinder Singh, who she said had betrayed her," deputy superintendent of police Kesar Singh said, adding that a case had been registered against Gurwinder, manager of a reputed footwear brand in SAS Nagar, under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
However, no arrest had been made till filing of the report. The body was handed over to the parents after post-mortem.
