Girl drowning case: one accused nabbed

One of the two main accused in the murder of the 2nd year BA student from Chandigarh who was allegedly pushed into the Bhakra Canal by her boyfriend, was arrested on Sunday.

The main accused Gurvinder is still at large while his friend Sukhmani was arrested. He is in police remand.

During preliminary investigation, the accused confessed that they had picked up the girl from outside her college in Chandigarh and took her to Patiala, where they drowned her.

Confirming the arrest, SSP Hardial Singh Mann said, "We are still interrogating him about the reason for the act. We will give out details within a day or two."

According to the FIR, Gurvinder along with Sukhmani and Rohit, had picked up the victim from outside her college, and her friend from her paying-guest accommodation here on August 26. The deceased was pushed into the Bhakra Canal near Passiana Chowk here by her boyfriend, following an argument. Her friend had witnessed the crime and reported the matter.

Gurvinder and his friends were booked under sections 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence), and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), on the complaint the father of deceased. The body was located last Tuesday and was cremated at Barnala.
