Disappointed over a failed relationship that she had developed with a Haryana resident over the social networking website, Facebook, a 24-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at her house in Muktsar district.

The victim, Sandeep Kaur, a resident of Khan Khanna village in Muktsar, was a final-year student in Masters of Computer Applications (MCA) in Malwa College, Bathinda.

SHO, Kotbhai police station in Muktsar, Tejinder Singh said on the basis of preliminary inquiry a case under Section 306 of the IPC had been registered against Harkirat Singh, a resident of Karnal in Haryana.

The SHO added that the girl, as per the complaint by her uncle, used to chat with the accused over the social networking website. He claimed that the boy had reportedly made a commitment to marry her. The family was aware of the girl relationship with the Karnal resident through the social networking website.

However, the boy allegedly did not keep his promise and got engaged to some other girl, forcing her "Facebook girlfriend" to take the extreme step, the complainant claimed.
