Defending their family over suicide in a college hostel here last month, the parents of the victim's ex-boyfriend denied on Saturday that they had any support from the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
The charge against the boy was false, said the parents. "The girl left no suicide note. Everyone knows she was under treatment for depression," said Amarjit Gupta, father of suspect Sameer Gupta. "The girl's parents knew about it and they had not raised any finger at my son after the girl's death in hostel."
After the incident, the girl's family had not even mentioned Sameer's name to the police, though it had been aware of his long friendship with the victim, said Gupta.
On the evening of November 27, Jaishree of second-year commerce programme at SSD Girls College here was found dead in her hostel room. On December 6, the police registered a case against her former boyfriend, Sameer Gupta.
"We were surprised when the police registered a case against my son," said Gupta. "If we had any political support of the ruling party, my son would not have been so implicated on the basis of a few call records."
Sameer's family has requested senior superintendent of police Ravcharan Singh Brar for free and fair investigation into the matter. The SSP has marked the inquiry to the SP (headquarters). "We want fast inquiry, in the hope that truth will emerge and my son will be freed of false charges," said Gupta.
