GNDU food scientist elected AFSTI head

Dr Narpinder Singh, professor, department of food science and technology, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), has been elected president of Association of Food Scientists and Technologists, India (AFSTI), the apex body of food scientists of the country.

Dr Narpinder Singh, professor, department of food science and technology, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), has been elected president of Association of Food Scientists and Technologists, India (AFSTI), the apex body of food scientists of the country.

Dr Singh is among the leading food scientists of India and is well recognised for his work even at the international level.

His election for 2014-2015 term was declared at a function organised by AFSTI and National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) at Kundli in Haryana on December 13 and 14.

AFSTI is one of the largest professional and educational organisations, with around 3000 members - food scientists and technologists, across the globe. The major objective of AFSTI is to stimulate and advance knowledge base on various aspects of food science and technology by organising national and international conferences and bringing out technical publications, including the prestigious Journal of Food Science and Technology and Indian Food Industry.

The association recognises talent and excellence in the profession of food science and technology by conferring various awards and fellowship.

Dr Singh is an internationally known food technologist and is already a fellowof AFST(I). He is also a Fellow of other national academies like Indian National Science Academy (INSA), National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). He has around 180 research papers, 10 book chapters and one book published by the Royal Society of Academy to his credit.

He has held the position of dean (faculty of applied sciences) at GNDU and was also the coordinator of the university-industry linkage programme and also remained head of the food science department of the university. He has also been honoured with the prestigious JC Bose National Fellowship by department of science and technology, union ministry of science and technology and The Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
