The ongoing hunger strike by Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers' Association (GNDUTA) due to non-payment of arrears entered the ninth day on Friday.

Association vice-president Dr Amarjit Singh Soodan and secretary Dr Lakhwinder Singh Kang sat on relay hunger strike during the day.

In a statement, GNDUTA demanded that vice chancellor AS Brar should immediately correct the illegal changes in the dates of eligibility of five teachers for promotion and malicious rejection of five others on purely extra-academic considerations.

The statement claimed that an atmosphere of distrust and disgust had affected the overall progress of the university. The academic standards have deteriorated and the overall ranking of the university at the national level has fallen, the statement claimed.

The claims of the vice chancellor about the university growth were totally false and hallow, the protesting teachers alleged. The fact of the matter was that Brar had flouted UGC norms and the university calendar in matters of selection and promotion of teachers, they added.
