Members of Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers Association have written to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to intervene so that they can get their arrears.

In the letter, association president Dr Balwinder Singh and secretary Dr NPS Saini said that as per recommendations of the sixth pay commission and the Punjab government notification dated September 2, 2009, the pay scales of university teachers were revised with effect from January 1, 2006, but the salaries in the new scales were paid from September 1, 2009. The pay arrears of the period January 1, 2006 to August 31, 2009 had not been paid so far.

"As per the recommendations, the financial provision for the payment of arrears has to be made jointly by the University Grants Commission and the Punjab government on 80:20 ratio basis. Thus, the Punjab government has to bear just a fifth of the total expenditure," the letter said.

The letter further said that the Centre had taken a lead in this matter by de-linking the issue of enhancement of retirement age as a pre-condition for the release of its share of the pay arrears.

Earlier, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, had also made a request to the Punjab government through a letter on November 2, 2011 that an amount of Rs 21.53 crore be released towards payment of 40% of the amount due to teachers of the university, the letter added.
