The office bearers and executive members of the Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers' Union (GNDUTA) staged a protest inside the office complex of the university vice-chancellor on the campus here on Tuesday following reports that a senior faculty member of the department of commerce and business management (CBM) had been demoted after being found guilty in a forgery case.

On learning that an "official" 15-page letter regarding the demotion of Prof GS Bhalla of the CBM department had been delivered at his residence, GNDUTA members led by their president Prof Devinder Singh rushed to V-C Prof AS Brar's office. After entering the office complex, they went to the first floor where the VC was holding a meeting in the conference hall adjacent to his office.

They started shouting slogans against the V-C and demanded that they be heard and copies of the letter issued to Bhalla be made available to them. They also questioned the delivery of the letter at Bhalla's residence when he himself was present in his department. They also sought to know as to why a copy of this letter was not given to the head of the CBM department.

Initially, Brar refused to meet them. The university security staff locked the V-C office to prevent the protesting teachers from entering and staging a dharna. As the V-C continued with the meeting, GNDUTA members kept raising slogans against him.

I've nothing to do with it: V-C

When the VC did meet them, he washed his hands of the matter by saying that whatever action was taken against Bhalla was taken by a committee of which he was not a member. He said he was not aware of the contents of the letter.

Later, clarifying his stand before the media, Brar claimed, "I am neither a member of the committee nor aware of any letter issued to Bhalla."
